Lecture at the Sir JJ College, Mumbai

Mumbai, India
Lecture at the Sir JJ College, Mumbai
Dr David Fisher’s short visit to Mumbai at the end of February 2010 has, as in many of his other trips, created an interest also on behalf of the local academic community, which invited him to hold a lecture at the Sir JJ College, School of Architecture, UNIVERSITY OF MUMBAI , among the most prestigious of Indian architecture universities.

Invited by Dean Ragib Mishra, Dr Fisher explained his theory that Architecture is much beyond art, very far from the search for beauty and aesthetics.  The mission of an architect is all about contributing to society with environmentally sound, sustainable buildings.

In a country where there is an incredible wealth but also a huge need for housing, such a message, coming from Florence, the famous city of art is very well understood and conceived.

Indeed, after the presentation of the Dynamic Tower, the most iconic building today on everybody’s mouth, Dr Fisher explained that this beautiful landmark is the ice breaker for a new era of architecture, a sustainable and logic one.

Beauty is great, but what is more important is to build homes, which everybody can afford.

Opened in 1857, Sir JJ College was the first architecture university in Asia, and is located at the heart of Mumbai.

The Florentine architect provoked the students and Sir JJ College professors that were sitting on the charming old wooden benches of the amphitheatre, an old style class room, saying that architecture from now on should be about practicality, about industrialization and environment, creating homes rather than seeking beauty and building monuments.

Prof. Danwi that introduced Dr Fisher, has indicated that his invention indeed represented a thought-provoking breakthrough towards the architecture of the future.

As David Fisher said in the past: “the mission of an architect is to contribute to a better quality of living for all people”.  This social challenge is now also in his hands for a large neighborhood in Mumbai, since he was nominated to take part in the Advisory Council of  the Remaking of Mumbai Federation (RoMF) – but it is mainly in the hands of the students of architecture of Mumbai, the future architects.
